Southern Tasmanian Vineyards Red Wine Weekend: Check out some of the best red wines Southern Tasmania has to offer. (June 13 - 14)

Antarctic Midwinter Festival:
This series of exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations focus on the heroic age of Antarctic exploration and the adventures of pioneering explorers like James Cook, Dumont d’Urville, Roald Amundsen and Douglas Mawson. Presented by the Tasmanian Antarctic community, the festival examines the role that Hobart played in these great Antarctic adventures. (June 19 - 28)

Hobart Summer Festival: The annual event offers a host of activities around Sullivans Cove. A real highlight is the taste, a week of activities showcasing some of Tasmania’s finest food and wine. (December 28 -January 4)

January 2009


The Sydney Hobart Yacht race: The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which starts in Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day, reaches its climactic finish in Hobart. Join the crowds at Constitution Dock to welcome the weary crews home.

Moorilla Hobart International: The women’s tennis tournament provides a handy warm-up for the Australian Open and gets underway at the Hobart International Tennis Centre. Former winners include Kim Clijsters and Alicia Molik. (January 9 - 16)

Cricket: Commonwealth Bank Series, Australia v South Africa. (January 18)

Tasmanian Queens Prize Meeting: Expert marksmen will test their aim at the State Championships that are open to shooters from all over the world. (January 22 - 26, Campbell Town)


February 2009


The Australian Wooden Boat Festival: This biennial event offers a fascinating celebration of wooden boats that focuses on maritime culture, craftsmanship, art and nautical heritage. (February 6-9)

The Hobart Cup: Tasmania’s premier thoroughbred horse race is well established in the calendar as a major social event.

Royal Hobart Regatta: Tasmania’s oldest sporting event involves a broad range of aquatic and land events that includes sailing, rowing, swimming, wood chopping, jet-ski racing, dragon boat racing, a tug of war and a Miss Regatta competition. The three-day event takes place on the Derwent River.

Festival of Voices: This four-day midwinter festival celebrates the voice in song, performance, cabaret and hearty gatherings in and around Salamanca Place and the waterfront area.

Aztec Chocolate Festival:
Chocoholics shouldn’t miss out on this festival dedicated to the wicked world of chocloate. (Latrobe, July 12)

Devonport Jazz Festival: Held on Tasmania’s North-West coast, the festival is a celebration of all jazz genres - both old and new.


October 2009


Royal Hobart Show: Experience country life with a carnival atmosphere and enjoy wood-chopping contests, horse events, entertainment, rides plus show bags for the kids. (October 21 - 24)


December 2009


About 5,000 motor cyclists (there are about 8,000 road registered bikes in Tasmania) will show up at the annual toy run parade to raise money for charity.
